Taking time out to pray is the first thing I do each day. It doesn’t matter where I am, how much sleep I got the night before, or how I’m feeling. I know that getting through the day sometimes depends on the moments spent in prayer in the morning. Those moments can be the only thing that keeps me going when days aren’t so good.
Prayer is not some deep, big worded, loud talking show that many have been accustomed to. It’s more about connecting with God and getting to know Him. It’s about getting the strength you need for the day through reading your bible, crying it out, talking it out or getting answers in private. When you pray, you’re really just having a conversation with God. You can talk to him just like you would with someone else. Of course the conversations are not going to start be that long when you first start praying, and that’s okay. The more you continue to have conversations, the better and the deeper they’ll get.

Private Counseling Session
When you go to therapy, everything is always promised to be confidential. Well, what if you don’t really feel comfortable telling the therapist EVERYTHING? After all, there are some things that you just don’t want anyone to know. That’s okay. Prayer gives you the opportunity to talk about the stuff that you would rather not tell anyone else, including the therapist. You can get out all the bottled up emotions you may have, and get them fixed. After you’ve talked it out, you can read through scriptures to get your feelings and thoughts on the right track. You won’t even have to sign a waiver.
Convenient and Personal
Getting prayer in can happen when and wherever you’d like. You can (and should) pray when you are feeling good, and when you’re having the worst day ever. Depression can make you feel like no one understands you, not even your own self sometimes. That’s okay. Because even when you don’t understand yourself, God understands you. During your prayer and bible reading time, you’ll get to know that God gets you even if no one else does. Since everyone is different, everyone is going to have different conversations with God. He’s able to speak to you in a way that gets your attention and that you can understand. You won’t have to worry about talking to someone hoping that they get you, or avoiding someone because you know they don’t get you.
Find Out More About God
If you are just beginning your relationship with God or don’t have one, prayer is a great opportunity to build it. I know that when I started out with my relationship with God, I had no idea how to pray. I used as many big words as I could along with a bunch of “thee’s” and “thou’s”. It was terrible (LOL). I didn’t know what to say sometimes except, “Help me!” It’s gotten better now though. I learned that God doesn’t need our big words, He really just wants us to be honest. When you first become a Christian you may not know much about God, and that’s pretty normal. After spending time talking to God and reading your bible, you’ll find out more about Him. You’ll be able to get to know Him personally. That’s what being a Christian is all about.
Get Re-focused on What’s Important
Sometimes when your mind is filled with all types different stuff, it’s hard to focus on what’s important. You may have a bunch of thoughts running through your head about everything. You might be thinking about when you need to go grocery shopping, to when your son will finally get potty-trained, to why your husband won’t take to trash out, to why you can’t lose that baby weight. All those thoughts going through your head at one time can make you feel overwhelmed. During your prayer time, you can get your thoughts organized and focus on what matters most. When you have so much going on in your life, it’s difficult to get it together easily. Taking time out to pray can get your mind settled.
Start Your Day in a Great Mood
If you aren’t a morning person, then prayer will work wonders for you. I’m not really a morning person, but I’ll get up if I make myself think I have to. Waking up early can be a burden, especially when you are depressed. You may secretly hope that the sun doesn’t come up until 12 or not hope that somehow you won’t have to get up until then. It’s completely understandable. When you do have to get up though, praying and reading your bible will help put you in a better mood. Getting out all the angry, sad feelings before your day begins will set you up for success. During your prayer time, you’ll also get your attitude adjusted and be more enthused about getting your day started. On the other hand, if you are a morning person prayer can enhance your mood at the beginning of your day.
Staying encouraged and continually keeping away the negative emotions that come with depression is essential to your overall health. Prayer can help you get a handle on how you’re feeling and untangle the thoughts you have. Having a conversation with God and reading your bible is a great way to weed out all the terrible things that may be going through your mind. It’s a simple way to get your day started, or it can be a time to just “woo-saah”.
